The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) was established in 1984 as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA) before rebranding in 1992. It was officially inaugurated on September 3, 1984, by the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) to offer postgraduate theology programs.
